Georgia Tech added to its impressive body of work in the transfer market today with the addition of Northwestern WR Kyric McGowan. Recruited originally as a running back, McGowan morphed into a Swiss Army knife for the Wildcats — he featured primarily as a slot receiver, but was able to line up anywhere on the field to create matchup issues for opponents. McGowan adds a proven veteran presence to a young Yellow Jacket receiving corps that lost two major contributors this offseason: senior Jalen Camp (to the NFL Draft) and sophomore Ahmarean Brown (to the transfer portal). As Tech continues its transition away from the flexbone option, offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude may look to utilize McGowan’s ability to create separation between himself and defenders to stretch the field vertically. Playing McGowan in the slot may also make Tech more effective at creating space when stretching defenses horizontally in 10 personnel sets (1 RB; 0 TEs).

McGowan becomes the sixth transfer originally from Georgia in Tech’s 2021 class, joining Kenyatta Watson II (from Texas), Kevin Harris (from Alabama), Makius Scott (from South Carolina), Nick Pendley (from Mississippi State), and Devin Cochran (from Vanderbilt). All are poised to be significant contributors on a young team focused on putting local talent in positions to succeed and continue building up the brand of the 404.
